Two circles whose radii are 10 cm and 8 cm are tangent to a given horizontal line and tangent externally to each other at point A. If both circles lies above the line, how far is point A from the horizontal line?

\sin \alpha = \frac{2}{8 + 10} = \frac{x}{8}
x = \frac{8}{9}

\text{required distance} = x + 8 = \frac{80}{9} \,\, \text{cm}

Good Job Lj. I can see your skill in CAD is improving. How did you manage to create an arrowhead for the angle alpha?
